Cydia is considered as the App Store for jailbroken devices, unfortunately they stopped app purchases because of some bugs in Cydia.
The man behind Cydia, Saurik clarified in his statement given to Reddit after identifying a bug in the app functioning, this may cause damage to users data. Further, also revealed that this bug made Saurik identify the issue and made him to close down all the purchases from Cydia. Finally, they shut down Cydia in 2018.
One important point to remember is that all these apply only on Cydia store and not Cydia installer users who have jailbroken devices can still download tweaks on their devices.
Let’s Get Started
Cydia is a package manager mobile app for IOS that enables a user to find and install software not authorized by Apple on jailbroken iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices.
It also refers to digital distribution platform for software on IOS accessed through Cydia software. Many of the software packages available through Cydia are free of charge, although some require purchasing.
Cydia is developed by Jay Freeman (also called “saurik”) and his company, SaurikIT. The name “Cydia” is a reference to the moth genus Cydia, notably the codling moth (with a scientific name of Cydia pomonella), which is the proverbial “worm in the apple.”
What is Cydia?
Cydia and Jailbreaking is a common term that you have most likely came across from other people who owned an Apple’s product such as the iPhone, iPad, or iPod. With Cydia installed on your iPhone, you will have the ability to install any type of iPhone’s apps even the one that cost money are available here for free.
Not just that but you can take your iPhone and travel international with All Carrier Unlocked! Jailbrekaing and Cydia has been out ever since the 1st Generation of iPhone but many new iPhone users might not be so familiar with it because it has never been approved by Apple as an Official App under their name.
Because of such reasons, Cydia has its own payment system which is not run by the Apple’s Store. I will dissect it into multiple parts for you guys to understand better of what Cydia really made of.
It is simply an amazing software installer like Apple’s App Store that allows you to take total advantage of a JailBroken device. Giving you the Freedom to install any type of software you can find and making your device more useful than ever before!
Once it has been successfully installed on your iPhone, you will have all unlocked carrier giving you the option to choose from any phone service provider you want even international.
What’s even better is Cydia come with special FTP apps that you can use to transfer files, music, movies much faster without the need or use of iTunes!
Cydia software and apps are created by the developers from the JailBreak’s Community and including access to Free and Paid software and themes. You can purchase apps from Cydia’s Store with PayPal as that is the only payment that is currently being accepted.
Purpose and Function
Cydia provides graphical user interface (GUI) to jailbroken users using Advanced Packaging Tool (APT) repositories to install software unavailable on the App Store. Cydia is based on APT, ported to IOS as part of Jay Freeman’s Telesphoreo project.
Software packages are downloaded directly to the IOS device. Apps are installed in the same location as Apple’s own applications, the /Applications directory. Jailbroken devices can also still buy and download apps normally from the official App Store.
Most Jailbreaking tools (each of them supporting a specific set of devices and IOS versions) install Cydia automatically, while others provide a choice to the user.
Software Available Through Cydia
Some of the packages available through Cydia are standard applications, while most packages are extensions and modifications for the IOS interface and for apps in the IOS ecosystem.
Some apps available on Cydia are also emulators able to run images of games for old game consoles, albeit without those consoles’ responsive controllers. Cydia enables users to find and install open source packages as well as purchase modifications for jailbroken iPhones.
These modifications are based on a framework called Cydia Substrate (formally MobileSubstrate), which makes it relatively easy to install and update said modifications.
UNIX command line tools are available on Cydia as well, including bash, coreutils and OpenSSH, meaning the device could potentially be used as a full-fledged UNIX workstation, although without many development tools.
In March 2009, the now-defunct blog TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) announced that the Cydia Store, the in-app software purchasing system for Cydia, had opened for sales.
The announcement also mentioned that Amazon payments was the only option available, but that PayPal would be added in the future, which it was. Cydia stopped accepting Amazon Payments in 2015, leaving PayPal as the sole payment option.
After a bug related to PayPal digital token authorization was discovered which affected “very few users,” via TechCrunch, Freeman decided to shut down the Cydia Store on December 16, 2018.
Is Cydia Safe?
Due to the fact that Cydia is not being made or developed by Apple, we can not guarantee that it is 100% Safe to use. As Apple have stated, JailBroken’s devices are not being supported under their warranty.
Cydia is actually just an Application where you can download more other useful Software and Tweaks from. The program by itself is safe and cause no harm to your devices.
However, whichever apps you decided to download from can cause a problem if you choose to install the wrong one. There’s a small chance that malware apps can be leak into the Cydia App Store due to almost every 3rd-party app is approved very easily without much security’s scanning.
But in the end, All Jailbroken devices are exposed to a higher chance of getting malware and virus attack.
So your best practice is before you start downloading any unknown app from Cydia’s App Store, please make sure you’ve done some good research from google first about that App and read some reviews on how to use it before start installing it.
One of the most dangerous things that could happen is unlike the Official Apple’s App Store, Cydia doesn’t stop you from installing a Tweak or App that is incompatible with your devices.
So be sure to only choose to install the Apps that correspond to your IOS version. Like if the Tweak or Apps stated it only compatible with IOS 6.1, do not attempt to install it on IOS 6.2 or IOS 5.0 as that will lead to your iPhone being dis-functional and you will have to restore your iPhone to Factory settings again.
Cydia can be really safe when you use it with precaution, such as only downloading the apps or tweaks that belong to a trusted source / repositories. For example, BigBoss Repo is one of those really trusted cydia sources along side with the ModMyi repo as well.
Is Cydia Legal?
Recent update news stated that Cydia is Legal for All Apple devices however, the thing that make Cydia not Legal is the fact that to actually get Cydia onto your Apple Devices, you will need to go through a process called Jailbreaking.
While jailbreaking is legal for the iPhone and iPod, it is not legal to jailbreak your iPad or iPad Mini until further released notice.
Can I remove Cydia completely after I have installed it?
Absolutely Yes you can. Simply update your IOS to a newer version by going in DFU mode or just tap and hold down the Cydia Icon from the Home Screen until the “X” appear to uninstall it, but do know that this will not remove your Jailbreak installation and must be re-flash with iTunes to remove it completely and gain back your Full Apple Warranty.
To do that, you can always visit: https://ipsw.me/ and get the latest IOS software for your devices, it is a lot more faster to download your files from ipsw than through iTunes.
